Description

The im3O module (breakout board) has 3 Opto Coupler inputs, using the high quality LTV-814H.

The inputs are bidirectional, meaning they can have any polarity (+ and - can be on any input pin). An input voltage above about 1.9V will turn the output on (inverted output, 'on' = 0V). The input voltage should not exceed 50V. Higher input voltages are possible by placing a resistor in series with the input, but is at your own risk!

The outputs are open collector, and have on board pull-up resistors that can be connected to 3.3V or 5V via a solder jumper located on the top of the board (marked "3V" and "5V"). For example, if the "5V" side of the solder jumper is made, the output will be 5V with no input, and will drop to 0V when the input rises above 1.9V.

The 3 outpus are available on pins marked '1' to '3'. If the outputs are connected to a Microcontroller port with built in pull-up resistors, these on board pull-up resistors might not be required (no solder jumper has to be made). Output 2 can additionally be connected to pin marked 'B' by shorting solder jumper SJ1. Output 3 can additionally be connected to pin marked 'C' by shorting solder jumper SJ2.

This module is designed and manufactured by Modtronix! Only high quality components from reputable suppliers are used! This is NOT a cheap module using no-name components! See "High Quality Components" section below for component details.

The inputs for the 3 opto couplers are available via a 6 pin, 3.5mm Terminal Block connector (if selected via "Terminal Block" option above). Each input has 2 pins, which can accept a voltage up to 50V (any polarity).

To use this board with 5V circuitry, do the following:

  • Supply 5V power to the pin header pins marked 0V and 5V
  • Ensure solder jumper marked "5V" on front of board is made, and solder jumper marked "3V" is open!
  • Connect up to 3 inputs to "IN1", "IN2" and "IN3" inputs (inputs can hava any polarity)
  • Outputs are available on pins marked "1", "2" and "3" (5V with no input, drops to 0V when input rises above 1.9V)

To use this board with 3.3V circuitry, do the following:

  • Supply 3.3V power to the pin header pins marked 0V and 3V3
  • Ensure solder jumper marked "3V" on front of board is made, and solder jumper marked "5V" is open!
  • Connect up to 3 inputs to "IN1", "IN2" and "IN3" inputs (inputs can hava any polarity)
  • Outputs are available on pins marked "1", "2" and "3" (3.3V with no input, drops to 0V when input rises above 1.9V)

This board is part of our iMod product range, and can very easily be added to any of our products that have iMod ports.

The im3OC has two rows of standard 2.54mm (0.1") pin headers. The rows are 0.7" apart, allowing this module to be mounted on a breadboard or standard 0.1" grid prototype board. The picture to the right shows some iMod modules mounted on a standard prototype board.

The pin headers supplied or soldered to this board are selected in the "Header Type" option at the top of this page.

Order Code

The following order codes can be used to order this module with different terminal block options:

  • im3OC-bare - Bare, no pin header or Terminal Block assembled.
  • im3OC-tbb - With PCB mount, 3.5mm screw type terminal block (TB06B-F350-W4) assembled.
  • im3OC-tbp - With pluggable, 3.5mm terminal block header (TB06P-M350-H4) assembled, and matching terminal block plug (TB06P-F350-R4) included.

The following codes can be appended to the order codes shown above to add pin headers. See the "Pin Headers" section above for details:

  • -h3l - Two loose 3.0mm Pin Headers are supplied with the board.
  • -h3 - Two 3.0mm Pin Headers are soldered onto the board.
  • -h6 - Two 6.0mm Pin Headers are soldered onto the board.
  • -sw - Two Round Swiss Pin Headers are soldered onto the board.
  • -pf - Two Press-Fit Headers are soldered onto the board.
